Black Crowes are by far my favorite band, and thats for a reason. That reason is they are some of the best musicians who play some of the best Rock n Roll. If you like radio music, listen to the radio and don't go to the concert. If you're a true fan you'll know the songs they're playing, and you'll also know that when they play live they do a lot of covers. The covers they do are typically not the most common songs out there. Furthermore, if you're a true Crowes fan you'll still love seeing them live even if you don't know the song. The Black Crowes are probably one of the most loyal bands to their fans and in turn is why they probably have one of the most loyal fan bases(that is true fans). So in short, if all you want to hear is remedy, she talks to angels, twice as hard and jealous again, buy their greatest hits and shut up. Don't buy the tickets to the concert so that way someone who will really appreciate their music will have a chance to get in.

Question: What do you get when you mix high expectations with a doo doo venue and a long-standing sibling rivalry? Answer: Bittersweet memories for what once was and this review. So, after staring for hours at the light of a candle following the concert last night with conflicting desires to set the house on fire/assume the fetal position and gently weep, I feel compelled to put my angst on virtual paper. First, I have to accept accountability for my tardiness. Logistical issues with a friend's work commitment, a primordial yell from my gut to be fed, and a wrong assumption that the show wouldn't actually start exactly at 7p had us walking into the concert halfway through "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution". A quick stop by the merchandise counter revealed that they didn't have my t-shirt size (though a close friend was happy with hers) and off we went with a couple of beers in tow. We slid by an older couple who were both being kept alive with oxygen tanks (literally!) and found some great seats behind our ticketed row. About this time, the Crowes are moving into "Soul Singing", which, though I really love the title imagery, is a marginal song from an even more marginal Crowes album in my opinion. Given this, I take the opportunity to really take in the scene before me: The venue is about 1/3 filled which leaves one with the feeling that any energy is being sucked into a black hole, and there is a large projection screen only marginally smaller than the crowd hanging over an lackluster stage containing the band. Add a couple of smoke machines and you've got the picture. Now I start to look closely at what's happening with the "band"...I use quotes here because, while I see bunch of people up on stage playing music, I don’t see much synergy. Rich is staring at his guitar while playing stage left and I think it’s more than my imagination that he has deliberately turned his back to the band. (This continues for the remainder of the concert) Do you really need to concentrate THAT HARD on pentatonic scales you have been playing for three decades, bro? Chris keeps looking over to him and I’m left with the vague feeling of someone who is still trying to turn over the engine after the car has been flooded. The drummer (Steve Gorman?) is hidden behind a sea of drums, but, out of the whole bunch, seems to be the only one attempting to help him start the car. They launch into “Thorn in my Pride” and I catch a glimmer of hope, particularly on Chris’s blues harp jam in the middle. Neither the moment nor the energy lasts though, as they follow-up with “Oh Josephine”. I stay to listen to it because my company likes it even though I’m itching to follow my Black Crowes concert tradition and go out for a “beer”. Mid-way through “Twice as Hard” I’m feeling tall again and try to embrace the on again/off again momentum building with “Jealous Again” and “Remedy”. I pull out the lighter I bought specifically for the occasion, light it, and… the light is drowned by a sea of floodlights. It’s over… No encore... Just shuffling feet around me and some awkward hugs between Chris and the back-up singers as the band rushes to exit the stage. I’m among the enthusiasts left rooted in shock where I stand… Now I’m pissed and trying hard not to show it because I have company. I storm out of the row and in the process commit a social gaff by separating an innocent couple who are trying to exit with the rest of the crowd. I feel compelled to apologize and this pisses me off more…where’s my apology?? I have the same feeling I had as a teen in the back of a car with an inexperienced girl with braces – Chafed and Unfulfilled. I think the concert staff’s admonishment to finish my beer prior to my exit will give me some time to collect my thoughts, but we still walk around aimlessly for 30 minutes before reaching the car. The length of time walking to and from the car lasts longer than the entire concert. I can’t even listen to the home-made concert CD on the ride home. The irony that I correctly guess most of the songs on the set-list is a bitter reminder of past greatness that, seemingly, will not be returning. I start an argument in the car on an unrelated topic because I want to be pissed about something else. I’m not disappointed with the result. I get home, go to bed, and stare at the fire thinking, among other things, that even the oxygen tanks of the couple down the row from us couldn’t again breathe life into this band. That saddens me. The good news is Chris’s voice is still strong and I have my memories of 5 concerts and, besides, a lot of good memories that their songs invoke…Long live The Black Crowes! (As long as it’s on CD) If any fan’s are still reading, here’s the entire set-list I grabbed from a roadie during a quick break: GOOD MORNING CAPTAIN STING ME HARD TO HANDLE WISER TIME I AIN’T HIDING GOODBYE DAUGHTERS OF THE REVOLUTION SOUL SINGING THORN IN MY PRIDE OH JOSEPHINE TWICE AS HARD JEALOUS AGAIN REMEDY

Yet another amazing Crowes show. As a true fan, I do not recommend the Crowes to anyone who has only heard the early 90's radio songs. That is not who the Crowes are. A true fan can rattle off 10 of their favorite songs in 15 seconds that DO NOT include Hard to Handle, She Talks to Angels, Jealous Again, or Remedy. I strongly recommend the band to everyone I know but you have to be familiar with ALL of their albums to enjoy their shows completely. They play a completely different setlist almost every night so seeing them multiple times on the same tour is the way to go. 4 shows in 9 nights for me - pure joy.

Too bad for you guys, because the gig in London was utterly amazing!! I am so glad they didnt play the old songs! I felt that in the 20+ times Ive seen the Black Crowes, this past show, with all the new material, stands up to being one of the highlights of my concert experiences. So much so, Im heading to the States to see a few more of their shows in Michigan and California! Im still buzzing from the concert! Black Crowes!! You rock! Please continue with the success of your new material. It's unequivocally perfect, and you sound fantastic! A big nod to Jeremiah and Make Glad! Sweet tunes! :)
