Collective Soul. Where a soulful voice meets wicked guitar and the band is determined to make sure you walk away with a smile and a fistful of memories that you will be talking about with your friends for years to come. Either by design or the fact that people don’t realize how many hits these guys have, Collective Soul plays relatively small venues. Portland was packed in an intimate general admission theater with bars everywhere and people crushed against the stage…just how the Rock Gods intended. Most in attendance had seen them multiple times and with the love coming from the crowd and from the stage, it felt like we just stumbled across musical magic playing in a friend’s garage. Lead singer Ed Roland, lead guitar Joel Kosche, bass player Will Turpin and rhythm guitar player Dean Roland have been together almost 20 years. Two are brothers. They used that familiarity to improvise during the show, playfully challenging one another and creating unique musical moments that reminded me why I absolutely love live music. Ed was challenging the amazingly talented Joel, not only to play around with their own riffs, but to put out on some classic riffs from AC/DC and Queen. Their drummer, Cheney Brannon is relatively new to the group, but he clearly could keep up with the games and the band seems to love his wild and fresh approach. Clearly no shortage of hair, talent or energy behind the plexi. These guys played not just to the crowd, but with the crowd so that it felt like we were all performing classics like “Heavy,” “Listen,” “The World I Know” and “Shine.” And their closing with each band mate slowly waving and walking off stage one by one while everyone belts out the chorus to “Run,” is about the best way I have seen to end a show that no one wants to end.

Collective Soul needs to get way more attention. They are such an iconic Rock band. Their song catalog gives them hit after hit for you to rock with at every show, and their new songs are the best in years. That is because they only know how to keep getting better. When they played at the Regency last week, they made every spot in that theatre feel like it was the front row. Ed has an amazing energy that makes you feel like they are playing just for you!

Just like the other 4 times I have seen them, they kicked ass. These guys haven't lost a step, they still rock like 20 year olds. Great energy, GREAT setlist, great performance. All I can say, if you get a chance to see them, you need to. Good job, Soul!!!!!!!!

What can you say bout this band, where do I start? THE CONCERT WAS AWESOME!!! I have been a fan ever since 1992! I have never had the chance to see them until now. Let me tell you, the deliver, and you will not be disappointed. I can't say enough about the energy that the WHOLE BAND brings. A 90s band to have managed to stay above the line of forgotten bands. I liked this show so much, i'm traveling to st.louis in august to see them! The wa y they ended the concert with "run", hearing the crowd chant "we've both got a long way to run" until the band left the stage, hearing ed still strum the final cords, until he disappeared. Absolutely amazing! Reminded me of U2's 40! Keep up the good job guys! Loyal fan!
