Incubus Rocks out a Stellar Performance Are you in? I was in, a giant mosh pit Monday night at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison listening to the alternative rock band Incubus as they played their 16th date on their Morning View tour. Weezer knock-off and garage rock band Hometown Hero, opened the show with heavy guitars as the pit grew in preparation for the headliner, Incubus. While Hometown Hero was worth the listen, the mosh pit was getting more anxious, wild, and expectedly out of hand. Lights dim, stars on the backdrop shine, and the spaceship lands as Incubus blasts Circles to the awaiting fans. The set is shaped like a spaceship with the universe floating behind them. Lead singer Brandon Boyd, bounds down the launch platform and to DJ Kilmore as they time out the beginning of Nice to Know You. A couch and lamp were brought out to create a relaxed acoustic feeling while the lyrics of Mexico bounced over the still aggressive audience. I made a valiant effort to stay in the mosh pit, as I was in the front row, but the crowd became so wild about 30 minutes into the set, that I had to be pulled out of the pit. The rest of the concert went on in stride, as songs played were mostly from their latest two CD’s, Make Yourself and Morning View. The hour and 50-minute show ended with a three-song encore and closed the performance with the last track off Morning View, Aqueous Transmission. This last song appropriately ended a great evening of wild crazy moshing with a gentle lethargic twist of rivers and kung fu. This show definitely rates as one of the top 10 if not top seven of my all-time concert-rating list.
