Many, many years ago a band played the Coogee Bay Hotel, supported by Unwritten Law and The Porkers. Who were these nobodies? How did they get a headlining gig over two great bands? I'm not going in to see them! 10 years later I saw this band - No Doubt - and kicked myself for not seeing them sooner.

From the start No Doubt were on fire! From behind a white curtain, No Doubt strolled out to much fanfare and applause and instantly raised the energy level inside the Joint. I'm not a huge fan of the music on CD, but live, Gwen Stefani brings a new dimension with stage presence which you can't help but be drawn to. Hella Good was the song I wanted to hear most - and they played it 2nd - and it was beyond great. If they'd played that continuously all night, I'd have to have been taken out on a stretcher. What also makes their performance great is their love of their fans. Twice she pulled fans onto the stage, read signs made by the crowd, took a scrapbook gift from a fan and kept the banter going all night. The rest of the band all have a skill and showmanship that outweighs a lot of bands I've seen, but it is just so hard not to watch Gwen. She is simply the greatest front woman I've seen. Who else in the world can make the men in the room sing "I'm just a girl in the world"?

Will definitely make the effort to catch them again.

    Setlist:
Spiderwebs / Hella Good / Underneath It All / Excuse Me Mr / Ex-Girlfriend / End It On This / Simple Kind Of Life /Bathwater / Guns Of Navarone / New / Hey Baby / Running / Different People / Don’t Speak / It’s My Life / Just A Girl
Encore: Rock Steady / Sunday Morning

NO DOUBT, Paramore and The Sounds
    Monday, June 8, 2009
    Walnut Creek

A show on a Monday is a great way to s-t-r-e-t-c-h that recently past weekend out just a little more and after a May full of Country Events at The Creek it was nice to get some high energy action cranked-up again.

It was hot on its own but throw in the infamous NC humidity and some shade with a breeze was a choice luxury worth seeking out. The beer lines weren’t a problem, most were queued up for the non-alcoholic Icee kind of beverages since the place was full of girls too young to drink.

I was in the general admission pit in front of the stage and they were packing them in. I weaseled my way closer because I wanted to check out “THE SOUNDS”, a band from Sweden and since the Swedes do meatballs and blonds so well my hopes were high.

Lead singer Maja Ivarsson came out in her blue Adidas jersey with painted on black tight pants that were cut-up with see-thru material patches. She was wicked as she sang bitterly “Hope You’re Happy Now, I Hope You’re Satisfied”. Then it was more in your face with “Don’t Want To Hurt You” as she cracked the mic cord like a whip and ran it across the stage.

I only knew the little I googled about the next band “PARAMORE”, but their tour shirts were everywhere you turned here. Lead Singer Hayley Williams is a petite red head with strawberry blonde highlights and her and the band found their origins in Tennessee so we are practically neighbors and she knew where she was because Raleigh and North Carolina were continually mentioned by name.

Paramore had the dial turned more to the Rock side than the Pop end of the scale and some around were grumbling but it was a great second gear to shift through as the night gained momentum.

The later it became the quicker time seemed to move, as fast as you could spill a dollars worth of a ten dollar beer it was suddenly time to pack back in to the pit for Gwen Stefani’s reformed and on the road again, “NO DOUBT”.

“Spiderwebs” had people scurrying for their location to best view the huge stage layout with a diamond video screen as wide as they come, a spider looking 4-legged ramp that crossed in the middle to form the drum riser and a half dozen rows of overhead lines of lights that formed pieces to the total web effect. And everything was white, which looked clean but also could be bathed in intensive lighting to make it any color.

Gwen wore a cropped white halter top with white riding pants, black boots and had her hair in three rolls behind her head. The band wore all white.

The mega-video screen could instantly change the whole scene on the stage, going from white noise to a giant vibrating speaker to bright island colors and even changing into other cities on other planets.

Gwen later changed too, into a glittering black and white checkered flag hot pants outfit and she stood at the head of the stage pointing out to the party on the grass as the lights went up and you could see that lawn was full to the very top of the hill then she dropped and gave us 20 pushups and raised to show off her guns to the roaring crowd.

No Doubt was the car they rode in on but Gwen is the muscle behind the machine. It was a night of bands with hot girl lead singers, Rock was looking as good as it was sounding tonight and that is how it should be.
