The “American Idol” runner up issued a statement over the weekend explaining that Glambert followers shouldn’t fret because the tune in “no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on.”
As a loyal Adamaniac, I thought “Want” was kind of … meh. Where was the Adam Lambert of the black nail polish, guyliner, angel wings shoulder pads and platform boots? Where was Lambert’s signature scream? His rocking edge? His skills at mixing up songs to put his own spin on them? Don’t get me wrong, it’s nowhere near as bad as the “Idol” approved “No Boundaries” single, but “Want” is basically just a boring pop song lacking Lambert’s special charm.
A statement from Hi Fi Recordings says the song, produced by Mark Endert (who has worked with Maroon 5, The Fray and Fiona Apple), “is the first single from the forthcoming album On With The Show, which will be released this summer on Hi Fi Recordings/Wilshire Records. Adam co-wrote many of the tracks that will appear on On With The Show … over the course of 2007/2008, right before Lambert’s meteoric rise to prominence.”
Lambert says that’s not exactly true, as some of the 11 tracks featured on On With The Show were actually recorded as early as 2005.
"The work I did back then in no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on,” Lambert said.
"Back in 2005 when I was a struggling artist, I was hired as a studio singer to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else. I was broke at the time and this was my chance to make a few bucks, so I jumped at the opportunity to record for my first time in a professional studio.
"I'm thrilled to be working with some of today's hottest songwriters and producers and can't wait for people to hear what my music really sounds like."
RedOne, the producer behind Lady Gaga hits such as “Poker Face,” “LoveGame” and “Just Dance,” recently told the Los Angeles Times‘ Pop & Hiss blog he hopes to record at least six songs with Lambert.
“I want to go rock -- David Bowie and Queen, but make it more easy for people to get. It has to be rock, but with an interesting dance angle to it, you know? You’ll like it,” RedOne said of teaming up with Lambert.
“You know what I like about him? He’s fresh. You can go almost whatever direction with him. People know him from being on ‘American Idol,’ singing other people’s songs, but you can take him in a new direction, and this will be the first time you hear Adam Lambert with his signature. My goal is to get his signature out from him to the world.”
Lambert’s debut album of new, post-“Idol” material is set for release this fall on 19 Recordings/RCA records.
Rolling Stone noted that “Want” will be available on iTunes starting tomorrow, June 23rd.
